Gender equality in sports

Sport and gender equality are inter-related in different manners. Sport is a social and cultural activity in which social constructions of masculinity and femininity play a key role. Sport can bring many benefits in relation to health, well-being, learning of new skills and freedom of movement. However, gender inequalities persist in all areas pertaining to sports, namely in access and participation, decision-making, access to resources, salaries, financial incentives, and in relation to appropriate sports facilities, as well as in the organisational cultures of sports bodies.

Despite all those inequalities, sport is one of the most powerful platforms for promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls. Gender equality in sport means breaking down the harmful stereotypes that continue to make women less likely to take up sporting activities. It also means promoting women’s advancement as professional athletes and leaders in the sport sector.

SPORTSROOM encourages gender equality in sports and is part of projects that aim to promote female empowerment through sport, disseminate in a more profound way the concept of gender equality, raise awareness of existing gender issues, promote female inclusion in political, participatory and social life using sport as a common thread.
